Two training sessions on SMART and wildlife crime prevention was conducted by D’ABOVILLE Foundation to field rangers and office technical staff of @DENR- Tamaraw Conservation Program last June 28-29 and July 4-5. These capacity-building sessions are part of a year-long training curriculum for TCP in adopting an adaptive protection system to enhance frontline protection of tamaraw in Mindoro.
The field ranger training composed of hands-on practice of handheld GPS device, SPOT reporting, and a refresher course on the use of SMART Mobile for field data collection. On the other hand, the training for office technical staff were more focused in SMART data analysis and management where they dealt with generating simple and complex data queries as well as running SMART reports which the office can use to effectively monitor current and emerging threats and assess their patrolling and monitoring efforts.
Initial SMART data flow structure for TCP was also designed by both groups at the end of the training to serve as their guideline within the system.
